“Medford continues to be recognized as a leader in energy and environmental initiatives as evidenced, most recently by the City being awarded Green Community status by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The most visible representation of this commitment is evidenced by the wind turbine at the McGlynn and Andrews School complex. The turbine stands as a beacon for residents and visitors traveling in and out of Boston on a daily basis. This structure reminds everyone about the importance of renewable energy. Constructed in 2009, the 100 kW turbine generates approximately 170,000 kWh per year saving the City approximately $25,000 in electricity costs.
Everywhere you look in Medford we are being green. In our schools, we are making energy efficiency improvements and earning Energy Star plaques for all of our middle and elementary schools. In our homes, we are investing in our new single stream recycling program and we are promoting “buying local” at our farmers market. On our public buildings, we have placed solar panels on the Medford Housing Authority. On City land, we are planting in our community garden … being green is contagious in this community! Being green increases the quality of life for all who live, work and visit our community. Our hope is that everyone will join with us in the greening of Medford”.

Medford Designated a Green Community June 2010
Additional info: After being designated a Green Community the City applied for and received approx $270,000 from the Green Communities Program. The grant is being used to replace the existing inefficient hot water heaters at the high school with high efficient gas hot water heaters. Anticipated savings of $41,000 annually in energy costs.
Wind Turbine and curriculum integration
With the installation of the wind turbine in 2009, the science classes at the Andrews and McGlynn Schools have incorporated wind energy into their lesson plans. The students are given the opportunity to build model wind turbines, learn the components of a wind turbine, and learn how the turbine turns wind into energy. City was awarded Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant (EECBG) Funds for energy efficiency improvements at Middle and Elementary Schools
Using federal Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant (EECBG) funds, Medford has completed energy efficiency upgrades at the 5 middle and elementary schools including, installation of demand control ventilation systems, upgrade of the emergency management system, and purchase and installation of vending misers to make the energy systems at the schools operate more efficiently and reduce energy usage.
LEED Certified Buildings
Medford has several buildings that have obtained LEED certification including one at Rivers Edge and at Station Landing.
The City of Medford developed the first Municipal Climate Action Plan in 2001
Medford developed the first Climate Action Plan in the Commonwealth with the help of ICLEI: Local Governments for Sustainability. The Climate Action Plan analyzes the amount of energy generated by Medford, its sources, and sets goals for reducing the energy consumption and being more energy efficient.

Medford EPA Energy Star Rated Buildings
Medford City Hall was the first Energy Star rated City Hall in New England in 2004. In 2010, 6 city owned buildings received Energy Star plaques from EPA including: City Hall, Andrews School, McGlynn School, Columbus School, Brooks School, and Roberts School.

City of Medford Received a Technical Assistance Grant from MA Department of Energy Resources for $35,000
With the help of the Cadmus Group the City completed a feasibility study for locating solar panels on the roofs of all six schools. A Request for Proposals was issued in the fall of 2010 and the City anticipates installing a solar PV array that is a minimum of 525 kW on the roofs of all six schools. Construction is expected to begin this summer.
Medford has been designated a Tree City USA for the last 12 consecutive years.

City of Medford Received the Larz Anderson Museum Choice Award at the 2005 Altwheels Transportation Festival
for efforts to encourage the use of alternative fueled vehicles while showcasing General Motors 100% electric sports car the EV1.
